On March 30, 2025, a regular Sunday turned into something special at Damas de Filipinas, thanks to the efforts of RC Manila Sta. Ana, RC Pasay West, and RC Jose Abad Santos Manila, along with other clubs from District 3810. People came together, some unsure and others curious, not knowing that this event would change their lives for the better.
The focus was on “Community Economic Development,” and three key activities made a big impact:
1. Seed Distribution – “Halamanan sa Damas” Initiative: This wasn’t just about giving out seeds—it was about helping families become more independent. They received vegetable seeds that could grow in small spaces, even in the city. People were excited to learn that these seeds could help them save money by growing their own food at home.
2. Hydroponics Seminars & Workshops: Led by CP Nito Siasat and Rtn. Carmelita Siasat, these sessions showed how anyone could grow healthy food without needing land. Using simple materials, participants learned how to set up their own mini gardens. In just two weeks, they would see the results of their work.
3. Grocery Pack Distribution: These packs, filled with items that went well with the seeds, provided immediate help while supporting the goal of self-sufficiency.
The real magic of the day was seeing how people changed. Many arrived looking worried and tired, but as the day went on, they became more hopeful and excited about starting their own gardens and small businesses.
Rotary’s approach helped with both immediate and future needs. By teaching sustainable farming, the project didn’t just fight hunger—it also helped reduce stress and depression. Gardening offered a sense of purpose and achievement that medicine alone couldn’t provide.
As the President of RC Jose Abad Santos Manila, I saw how this project showed Rotary’s dedication to making lasting changes. The teamwork between different clubs in District 3810 ensured that all community needs were met—from sharing knowledge to providing materials and emotional support.
When participants left, they took more than seeds and groceries—they took home dignity, hope, and the understanding that they weren’t alone. This is the true magic of Rotary: changing lives not through big gestures, but through thoughtful actions that help people improve their own situations.
In two weeks, when the first plants start growing in Damas de Filipinas, they’ll be more than just plants—they’ll be proof that with the right support, communities can build a healthier, more sustainable future. This is how Rotary makes a difference—one seed, one family, one community at a time.
