The Rotary Angel of Sight Project for Zamboanga City, made possible through Global Grant GG2575510, has brought lasting and transformative improvements in eye health for public school students, teachers, and the wider community. This groundbreaking initiative—spearheaded by the Rotary Club of Zamboanga City (RI District 3850, Philippines) in partnership with the Rotary Club of Gwangyang Heeyang (RI District 3610, South Korea), DepEd Zamboanga City, and the Tzu Chi Foundation—stands as a testament to the power of sustainable, collaborative humanitarian action.
Between 2025 and 2027, the Angel of Sight Project will deliver remarkable impact:
Each year, more than 100 students, teachers, and elderly residents will receive free vision screenings and eyeglasses, breaking down academic and social barriers caused by undiagnosed or uncorrected vision problems.
Local Rotarians, DepEd nurses, teachers, and barangay health workers will be given specialized training to conduct eye acuity tests, ensuring that effective vision care continues in Zamboanga’s schools and communities long after the grant concludes.
State-of-the-art ophthalmic equipment—including autorefractors, keratometers, phoropters, and retinal cameras—will be provided to community health centers, dramatically increasing the accuracy and speed of diagnosing and treating eye conditions.
Widespread community awareness campaigns will empower families and educators to prioritize eye health and early detection, nurturing a proactive culture of vision care across the city.
Long-term sustainability is built into every aspect of the project: continuous training, integration of vision screening into regular school health programs, and the steadfast support of the Tzu Chi Foundation for ongoing consultations, equipment maintenance, and technical support. Inclusivity is at the heart of the initiative—benefits are offered to all, regardless of religion, background, or financial means, in keeping with the humanitarian values of Rotary and Tzu Chi.
The Angel of Sight Project shines as a beacon of community-driven public health. Through strong partnerships and a focus on empowering local stakeholders, Zamboanga City is now equipped to sustain and expand vital eye care services—illuminating the path to better learning, brighter futures, and transformed lives.
The Rotary Club of Zamboanga City extends its heartfelt gratitude to the Rotary Foundation, all Global Grant sponsors—Rotary Club of Gwangyang Heeyang (D3610), Rotary Club of Donggwangyang (D3610), Rotary Club of Taipei Fu-Jung (D3481), and Rotary Club of Taipei Taimei (D3481)—as well as to the Tzu Chi Foundation, DepEd, Zamboanga City Medical Center, and the countless community volunteers whose dedication has made Angel of Sight a life-changing legacy for thousands in Zamboanga City.
