On August 23-24, 2024, the Rotary Club of Cebu Gloria Maris, in partnership with the
Lawaan 1, Talisay City LGU, PAGLAOM Drugstore, and the Rotaract Club of Cebu 3rd
District conducted a transformative and impactful medical mission at Barangay Lawaan I
Gym, Talisay City, Cebu. This two-day event provided essential healthcare services
directly to the community, we bridge gaps in medical access and provide essential resources
to those in greatest need. The mission’s focus was on improving access to healthcare by
offering free medications and wheelchairs to marginalized individuals and families.
According to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 400
million people worldwide are affected by various health issues. Millions of people worldwide lack access to basic health services, with many encountering significant barriers. Such factors include cost, distance, and a lack of healthcare infrastructure. In the Philippines, nearly One in five individuals lives in rural areas without sufficient access to healthcare, making it a significant concern. Events like this mission are crucial in reaching those who would otherwise go without care.
Throughout the event, the medical mission served a total of 556 individuals, including: 182 adults and 82 children, followed by 223 adults and 79 children on the subsequent day. The facility includes organized areas for triage, consultation, medication distribution, and a dedicated space for patient care. A section is designated for wheelchairs to assist individuals in need of mobility support. Ensured that no one left without receiving the care they deserved.
As the sun rose over Talisay City, many families arrived with their children in tow. The atmosphere was filled with hope and gratitude. Volunteers and medical professionals gathered together to support the cause. The staff worked tirelessly, providing not only medical assistance but also compassion. Understanding was provided to all who sought help. The mission was supported by Barangay Lawaan 1 Councilor Lyle Catacutan, Paglaom Pharmacy President Perseus Acedillo, and the Rotaract Club of Cebu 3rd District, led by President Harold Hussain. Their presence, along with the dedication of local volunteers, helped make the mission a tremendous success, emphasizing the power of collaboration and service.
Research from the Philippine Department of Health reveals that more than 11 million Filipinos live in communities with limited or no access to basic healthcare services, highlighting the importance of outreach initiatives like the medical mission at Barangay Lawaan.
The Rotary Club of Cebu Gloria Maris expressed their deep appreciation for all
the volunteers from Barangay Lawaan 1, medical professionals, and staff who selflessly
dedicated their time and expertise to make this medical mission a resounding success.
Through the collective efforts of the Rotary Club and its partners, the medical mission
was more than just an event; it became a powerful reflection of the spirit of service.
The lives of those served were undeniably impacted, leaving a lasting and positive
impression on the community of Barangay Lawaan. This mission was not solely focused on
providing healthcare—it was about fostering a sense of community and support where it
was needed the most.
As a result of this mission, many individuals who otherwise would have gone without any proper care, now have access to the medical assistance they desperately needed. The Rotary
Club of Cebu Gloria Maris is committed to continuing such outreach initiatives,
recognizing that healthcare is a basic right, not a privilege. The collaboration between
the Rotary Club, local leaders, and volunteers proves that when a community comes
together, transformative change is possible.
