Rotary Club of Cebu Gloria Maris Saves Lives Through Bloodletting, Legal Aid,and Financial Literacy for the Community

On July 23, 2024, the Rotary Club of Cebu Gloria Maris hosted an incredible event that

brought together community members for a transformative experience at the Bondad

Hall in VISCOM, Camp Lapulapu. This gathering was not just an event; it was a

celebration of life, unity, and empowerment, featuring a successful Rotary Bloodletting,

Free Legal Consultation, and Financial Literacy Talk.

The day began with heartfelt introductions and welcome remarks from esteemed

leaders including PDG Lilu Aliño, PDG MeAnne Solomon, AG Jacob Ong, AG Chona

Cejas, AG Marifi S. Gerona, and COS Mary Christine Chua. PDG MeAnne Solomon

shared a heartfelt story about how a single blood donation saved her daughter’s life

during a critical moment, reinforcing the message that every drop truly counts. Their

inspiring words set the tone for a day filled with purpose and collaboration. The club

extended its deepest gratitude to partners such as Fruitas, VISCOM's Lt. Gen.

Fernando Reyeg, and Colonel Joel Benedict Batara. Their invaluable contributions

helped make this event possible.

The Power of Collaboration

The efforts of the Rotary Club were further supported by the National Voluntary Blood

Services Program and dedicated health professionals from the Department of Health

(DOH), including Dr. Joan Antoinette R. Albito, Dr. Liana Villa, and Trisha Nicole T.

Akjul. Together, they collected over 70 healthy blood donations, showcasing the

power of community and collaboration.

In Cebu City, the need for blood donations is critical; in 2023 alone, the DOH reported that 1,796 bags of blood were collected, a significant increase from previous years. With rising health challenges such as dengue fever—where blood

donations are essential for treating severe cases—the importance of this initiative is

clear. As of September 2024, Cebu City recorded 597 confirmed dengue cases,

emphasizing the urgent need for blood donations to save lives during health crises.

Empowering Through Knowledge

A big shoutout goes to the Financial Literacy speakers from OONA Insurance, Fortune

General Insurance, PNB Allianz, EastWest Bank, and City CLOU by Golden Topper

CEBU. They provided essential insights that empower individuals to manage their

finances effectively—a crucial skill in today's economic landscape.

Financial literacy is not just about numbers; it’s about equipping community members with the knowledge to make informed decisions that can lead to greater financial stability and security.

Additionally, dedicated legal consultation speakers Atty. Elias Espinosa, Atty. Dante

Arriesgado, Atty. Kimberly Urtizberea, and Atty. Nickha Shanen Tupa made significant

contributions by offering guidance on legal matters affecting attendees' daily lives.

A Unified Community Effort

This event was not just about providing services; it was a testament to what can be

achieved when a community unites. The Rotary Club of Cebu Gloria Maris received

valuable feedback and next steps from Dr. Villa post-event, highlighting areas for future

improvement and engagement.

Heartfelt thanks were extended to all donors and volunteers—co-hosts Rotary Club of

Cebu South and Rotary Club of Cebu Fuente, Rotaract Club of Cebu 3rd District, and

participating clubs from Areas 1A to 1E—for embodying the true spirit of Rotary.

Moving Forward Together

The Rotary Club of Cebu Gloria Maris encourages continued inspiration and upliftment

within the community through service and fellowship. Together, lasting change can be

created that not only saves lives but also empowers individuals through knowledge and

support. This incredible day serves as a reminder that every small act counts—whether

it's donating blood or sharing financial wisdom—each contributes to a healthier and

more informed community. The club looks forward to maintaining this momentum as it

strives to make a difference in the lives of those around them.
