RCMD Baseball Clinic: A Home Run for Youth Empowerment

The RCMD Baseball Clinic held on January 17, 2025, at the Nayong Silangan Covered Court in Antipolo City, was a resounding success, thanks to the collaborative efforts of Rotarians, volunteers, and sponsors. The enthusiasm and energy displayed by the youth participants stood out the most, as shared by Rotaractor Mary Ashlei Cardenas, who felt inspired by their eagerness and positivity throughout the day.

"Compared to my expectations, the event was exactly how I imagined it—full of fun and excitement as the kids trained and enjoyed," Ashlei remarked.

Break times were a highlight, as they provided a much-needed pause for the participants to recharge and interact with each other.

For Rotaractor Kyle Daphne Tabuno, the hands-on approach of the coaches made the event special. "The event exceeded my expectations. I thought it would only focus on teaching baseball, but the participants received equipment, shoes, and clothes, which made it even more impactful," she said.

Participant Experience

The Baseball Clinic provided invaluable opportunities for the youth, enhancing their knowledge and passion for the sport. According to Ashlei, the clinic allowed participants to showcase their love for baseball and softball while learning new skills. Feedback from the participants indicated a high level of appreciation for the dedication of the organizers and volunteers. "They were delighted and truly grateful for the time and effort everyone put into making the event happen," she noted.

Kyle highlighted how the provision of proper baseball equipment boosted the participants' confidence and motivation to take the sport seriously.

Rotaractor Pia Marie Almonte emphasized that beyond technical skills, the clinic instilled discipline, teamwork, and self-confidence in the participants. "For many, it was a chance to realize their potential and dream of greater opportunities, such as scholarships or becoming national players," she said.

Team Effort and Challenges

Volunteers played a crucial role in ensuring the smooth execution of the event. They assisted in distributing food, drinks, and equipment while also offering encouragement and support.

Special thanks go to the Rotaract Club of Arellano University and Rotaract Club of Changbringers for their dedication and hard work in making the event a success. As Rowella Palma shared, "The volunteers were invaluable in keeping things organized and ensuring everyone had what they needed. Their presence created a welcoming and encouraging atmosphere."

However, the team faced challenges in maintaining the participants' focus and energy, particularly with the younger children. This was effectively addressed by dividing them into smaller age-based groups, with dedicated volunteers assisting each team.

Memorable Moments

Several memorable moments were shared by the Rotaractors, including the generosity of 1 United Baseball and Softball Philippines, which provided essential equipment and uniforms. Thanks to the support of the Antipolo Baseball Softball Coaches Association (ABSCAP) and the friends of Rotarian Dino Mariano in the USA, the event was made even more impactful.

Kyle fondly recalled witnessing young participants achieve small victories, such as hitting their first successful pitch.

For Rowella, the most touching moment was seeing the children express their gratitude in unison, acknowledging the hard work of the volunteers and sponsors. "It was heartwarming to hear them thank us with synchronized actions, a gesture that showed their genuine appreciation," she said.

Acknowledgments and Contributions

Special thanks to RCMD Current President Joann Cañete, Past Presidents Lia Francisco and Philip Nazareno, and Rotarian Angelo Mendoza, along with several other Rotarians who generously provided cash and kind donations that contributed significantly to the event's success.

We are also grateful to PP Perry Noble and Rotarian Anj's Spouse Ann Mendoza, who took the time to attend the event and show their support.

Closing Thoughts and Future Plans:

When asked to describe the event in three words, the responses were unanimous: "Success, enjoyable, and inspiring."

The Rotaractors extended their deepest gratitude to the sponsors and donors, especially Rotarian Dino Mariano, who generously provided the gears, uniforms, and coaching fees.

"Your support made a significant difference in the lives of these young athletes. Thank you for investing in their dreams and providing them with an opportunity to grow in skill and confidence," said Pia.

Looking ahead, the volunteers suggested introducing follow-up sessions and organizing a friendly tournament to keep the momentum going and provide long-term support to the aspiring athletes. "This would ensure participants have ongoing opportunities to develop their skills and stay engaged with the sport," Rowella added.

Conclusion

The RCMD Baseball Clinic was a stellar success, leaving a lasting impact on the youth participants and volunteers alike. It reinforced the importance of sports in shaping young lives and inspired hope for more community-driven initiatives in the future. As the participants left the event with new skills, equipment, and memories, they also carried with them valuable life lessons that will guide them both on and off the field.
