The 43rd PAL-Manila International Marathon proved to be a testament to resilience, camaraderie, and unwavering spirit, as over a thousand runners, organizers, and supporters braved the relentless downpour to culminate a successful event on Sunday. Despite the heavy rain that threatened to dampen spirits and disrupt the race, the marathon showcased the true essence of sportsmanship and environmental advocacy, aligning with the event’s theme, “Magic of Rotary for Sustainable Environment.”
Organized by the Rotary Club of Luntiang Maynila Prime and led by Race Director Rtn. Dino Jose, the marathon has long been a highlight of the event. This year’s edition, however, stood out not only because of the challenging weather but also due to its unwavering commitment to promoting health, unity, and environmental consciousness among Filipinos and international participants alike.
The race started promptly at 1:00 a.m. from Liwasang Ulalim at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Complex, with runners lining up amidst the drizzles and gusts of wind. The 42-kilometer category drew elite athletes, notably Kenyan runner Glady Keeto, who dominated the field with an impressive finishing time of 2 hours, 20 minutes, and 3 seconds. Keeto’s performance not only surpassed last year’s champion but also served as an inspiration to fellow competitors and spectators, demonstrating the enduring spirit of determination and perseverance amid adverse conditions.
Filipino runners also showcased commendable performances, with Jose Fabito and Requi Trupa finishing second and third, respectively. In the women’s division, Kenyan athlete Vigail Glady secured the top spot, while local talents Lorelie Magalona and Marie Antonnete displayed resilience and skill, finishing strong despite the challenging weather.
The event’s success was made possible through meticulous planning and collaborative effort by various working groups led by Brillian Castro Pelayo of the Rotaract Club of Luntiang Maynila Prime. The involvement of the incoming DRR, District Rotaract Representative, Monica Paula Ang Serrano, and support from Ambulance-One Raha under PP Ronan Li ensured the safety and well-being of all participants. Notably, motorcycle escorting the lead runners was provided by PP Arnil Senoron, facilitating smooth race flow and safety measures.
Financial support and prestige were bolstered by sponsors such as the Alay Lakad Foundation and D3810 Governor Jackie Rodriguez, who contributed generous cash prizes to motivate runners and elevate the event’s profile. These efforts underscored the commitment of Rotary and its partners to foster sportsmanship and community engagement.
Despite the heavy rain, the atmosphere was filled with enthusiasm and a shared sense of purpose. Spectators cheered on runners along the route, many of whom carried banners advocating for environmental sustainability, echoing the event’s theme. The marathon not only served as a platform for athletic achievement but also as a call to action for environmental preservation and sustainable practices.
Looking ahead, the organizers expressed optimism about future editions, with the tentative schedule for the 44th PAL-Manila International Marathon set for February 2026. The goal remains to increase participation, deepen environmental impact, and strengthen Rotary’s advocacy for a sustainable future. The event continues to embody the resilience and unity that define the Filipino spirit, inspiring generations to come.
As the 43rd PAL-Manila International Marathon concludes, it leaves a legacy of perseverance, community, and environmental consciousness—values that will undoubtedly propel the event to even greater heights in the years ahead.
