At 5:00 AM on November 24, 2024, the air was crisp in Manila, and the soft glow of dawn began to break over Luneta Park. A sense of anticipation filled the atmosphere as participants gathered for the much-anticipated Alay Lakad 2024 event. This year’s theme, “Alay Lakad Para Sa Kabataan ng Bagong Pilipinas,” emphasized the commitment to the youth and building a brighter future.
District Governor Jackie Rodriguez, the lead organizer from Rotary International District 3810, arrived shortly after. His vibrant energy radiated through the gathering crowd as he prepared for the simultaneous walk that would take place nationwide. Delegations from deferent groups converged at Quirino Grandstand, unified by a common purpose: to champion the youth.
As the sun gradually rose, illuminating the iconic Rizal Monument and the surrounding trees of Luneta, the first delegation was acknowledged by Director Ryan Ferdinand Calianta, the Alay Lakad Foundation Director. The moment was electric—the people cheered and waved banners, each proudly representing their groups.
First came the Rotary Club of Luntiang Maynila Prime, led by their dedicated charter President, Elberto Regis, sporting their signature green uniforms. They were followed closely by the Rotaract Club of Luntiang Maynila Prime, the Interact Club of Luntiang Maynila Prime, and the Rotary Community Corps - PH Connect, including the spirited Luntiang Maynila Response Team. Together, they formed a vibrant sea of green, a symbol of hope and renewal.
The atmosphere shifted as Mayor Honey Lacuna stepped on stage to deliver her welcome remarks. Her voice rang with enthusiasm, invoking the spirit of unity and resilience among the attendees. “This walk is not just a journey through the streets of our city; it is a walk toward a better future, one step at a time for our youth,” she proclaimed, her words echoing throughout the park.
Following her, the crowd was inspired by DILG Secretary Honorable Juanito "Jonvic" Remulla, who shared personal stories of transformation and resilience, reminding everyone of the impactful role that dedication plays in shaping young lives. Lastly, Senator Francis Tolentino, with fervor and passion, underscored the importance of investing in the youth as the true wealth of the nation.
With each speech, the participants’ spirits were lifted, solidifying their resolve to make a difference. As the crowd prepared for the commencement of the walk, there was a palpable energy—a mingling of hope and determination that transcended individual purposes, connecting them all as one unified force for change.
At 6:30 AM, the walk officially began—thousands of feet hitting the pavement in harmony, a powerful reminder that together, they could create meaningful change. Laughter and camaraderie mingled with inspiring conversations about initiatives for the youth; new friendships were forged and old ones strengthened with every stride taken along the scenic routes of Luneta.
Post-walk, the group gathered once more, not just as members of their respective clubs, but as a family committed to the cause. Charter President Elberto Regis invited us to a celebratory breakfast, a melding of voices and laughter. The aroma of traditional Filipino breakfast wafted through the air, promising the nurturing connection that followed the morning's beautiful endeavors.
As they gathered around the tables under the morning sun, the stories flowed—of hopes, dreams, and plans to continue their work beyond this event. Each bite of food tasted sweeter, fueled by the inspiring morning that had just unfolded, a testament to their commitment to the promise of a brighter future for “Kabataan ng Bagong Pilipinas.”
And so, the morning wrapped itself up, but the spirit of Alay Lakad 2024 remained alive in each participant’s heart—igniting passions, fostering connections, and inspiring endless possibilities for the nation’s youth.
