On a humid September 27, 2025, Cebu City’s pulse quickened not with the usual rhythm of traffic, but with a collective heartbeat of resolve. The Rotary Club of Cebu Gloria Maris (RCCGM) stood shoulder to shoulder with government agencies, private organizations, and civic groups at the pivotal event, Flood Hero Cebu: Movement for a Call to Action for a Flood-Free Cebu — an urgent gathering organized by the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI).
The venue hummed with purpose, where representatives including Past District Governor Lilu Aliño, Secretary Dorothy Borces, District Rotaract Chair Mary Catherine Englis, Past President Gay Marie Tiu, and Rotarian Diane Rallon joined forces with hundreds of stakeholders. This coalition was not simply a meeting but a vibrant platform designed to ignite collaborative momentum to tackle Cebu’s persistent floods — a menace worsened by climate change and urban expansion.
Participants listened intently to data revealing the increasing severity and frequency of floods, with personal stories underscoring the havoc wrought on communities. As the discussion evolved, the atmosphere turned hopeful; innovative ideas were exchanged, promising infrastructures were proposed, and bold strategies to enhance resilience took shape.
“Flood prevention is a community effort — when sectors unite, strong solutions flow,” noted a key speaker, encapsulating the spirit of the day. RCCGM’s representatives demonstrated their unwavering commitment to this cause, ready to leverage Rotary’s service philosophy in support of sustainable urban planning and disaster risk mitigation.
The event underscored the urgent need for long-term, sustainable solutions that go beyond emergency responses. Effective drainage systems, green infrastructures, community education, and policy reforms were highlighted as pillars for a flood-resilient Cebu. RCCGM’s participation aligns with their ongoing dedication to community health, safety, and environmental stewardship.
The synergy of this coalition sends a powerful message: when civic resolve and expert knowledge converge, communities are empowered to face climate challenges head-on and protect their future. This movement is a call to action — a promise that through unity and perseverance, Cebu can transform vulnerability into strength.
