RC Cebu Gloria Maris Brings Vision and Hope to MCCNHS Grade 8 Students for Brighter Learning

On a bright September morning, the gymnasium of Mandaue City Comprehensive National High School transformed into a hub of hope and clarity. On September 11, 2025, the Rotary Club of Cebu Gloria Maris, in partnership with the Cebu Optometric Society and Southwestern University PHINMA – College of Optometry, launched “Clear Vision, Bright Futures: An Optical Mission for Learning.”

Under the theme “Clear Eyes, Open Minds: Empowering Learners through Sight,” the initiative brought essential eye screenings to 150 Grade 8 students—young learners whose dreams depend on the simple gift of clear vision. Comprehensive screenings were conducted, with the distribution of corrective eyeglasses scheduled for October to ensure timely support for each student. Inside the gym, anticipation filled the air as students lined up for their turn. Charter Member Dr. Vivian Dyhongpo led the optometry team with expertise and warmth, while Rotary members and volunteers worked hand in hand to ensure a smooth and meaningful flow of activities.

Behind every pair of tested eyes stood a team of passionate individuals — Charter Member Dr. Vivian Dyhongpo, who spearheaded the technical aspect; President Roxene Rosario and Assistant Secretary Jabemarie Maquiling, who led the coordination; Secretary Dorothy Borces and Director Bernadette Ponce, who managed logistics; Vice President Atty. Rheswi Colina and District Rotaract Chair Mary Catherine Englis, who rallied volunteers. Their combined efforts reflected the spirit of Rotary: Service Above Self. Dr. Dyhongpo shared a thoughtful reflection: “A child’s clear vision is the lens through which the future comes into focus.” Her words captured the mission’s essence—helping learners see not just with their eyes, but with renewed confidence and potential.

The initiative symbolized Rotary’s dedication to Disease Prevention and Treatment, one of its key areas of focus. By addressing visual health, the club underscored that improving eyesight directly enhances educational performance, self-esteem, and opportunities.

Clear vision is not just about sight—it’s about unlocking potential and expanding horizons. The event illustrated how small acts of service, when organized with care and collaboration, can create meaningful, lasting change in a community.

As the students left the gym, smiles of excitement filled the room. Soon, they will receive their eyeglasses and return to their classrooms ready to read, learn, and dream with clarity. In a time when many distractions blur focus, this project stood as a radiant reminder that clear eyes truly open minds. The Rotary Club of Cebu Gloria Maris’ optical mission was not just about vision—it was about empowerment, compassion, and the promise of brighter futures for every learner it touched.
