Call it perfect timing ... as the Rainwater Collector System project dubbed “Pumapatak na Naman ang Ulan” was officially turned over, the rain began to fall. The system was formally received by school administrators led by Ms. Vilma Camba (Master teacher II - Overseer), Mr. Chi Cunanan (Public Development Officer), and Ms. Nimfa Cruz (Clerk) of Leodegario Elementary School in Marikina City on November 4, 2025.
Before the simple turnover ceremony, Rotary Club of Marikina West (RCMW) President Engr. Kevin Delfino facilitated a short training session for the school’s maintenance team, who will oversee the proper operation and upkeep of the system. Accompanying President Kevin from RCMW were Past President Radian Fantone and Spouse Nora Fantone.
Special appreciation goes to District Governor Gina Sanchez, District Rotary Foundation Chair/Past District Governor, Bobby Tanyag, Past President Pilar Lee, and the District Grants Committee for approving the district grant that made this project possible - benefiting the school’s 1,500 students, teachers, and staff.
The collected rainwater (up to 170 gallons) will be used for the school’s non-potable needs such as toilet flushing, general cleaning, and watering of plants. With this system in place, the school can reduce its reliance on utility-supplied water and lower its water expenses, even modestly—after all, rain is a free and renewable resource.
This initiative supports Rotary’s Area of Focus on “Environment,” promoting sustainability through water conservation. By capturing and reusing rainwater, the project not only lessens dependence on commercial water sources but also contributes to long-term environmental responsibility and cost efficiency.
