Project SILAW Turnover: A New Dawn of Hope and Sustainability for the Dumagat-Remontado Community

The Rotary Club of Mandaluyong (RCM) formally and joyfully turned over Project SILAW (Solar Irrigation, Livelihood and Water) to the Dumagat-Remontado indigenous families of Sitio Maislap, Brgy. San Isidro, Rodriguez, Rizal, on February 28, 2026.

With gratitude and optimism, the project was entrusted to Community Leader Mary Grace Joaquin, symbolizing the unity and commitment of the Dumagat-Remontado families. The handover represented not only the transfer of facilities but also the transfer of responsibility—anchored in trust, empowerment, and community ownership to ensure the long-term sustainability of the project.

The ceremonial turnover marked a meaningful milestone for both the Rotary Club of Mandaluyong and Brgy. San Isidro which was witnessed by Punong Barangay Jose Eric D. Ching, together with his barangay officials. The presence of Hon. Eric D. Ching and barangay officials affirmed the strong partnership between the Rotary Club of Mandaluyong and the local government in advancing inclusive and sustainable community development.

Funded through a District Grant, Project SILAW is more than a community development initiative—it is a symbol of hope, sustainability, and shared stewardship. Carefully designed to address the essential needs of the community, the project consists of three major components: the 1st component involved the rehabilitation of a deep well, ensuring reliable access to clean and safe water for the community; the second included the installation of solar-powered household lighting systems and a streetlight, improving safety and extending productive hours for the families; and the final component entailed the provision of gardening tools and vegetable seeds to support livelihood opportunities, strengthening food security, and promote self-sufficiency.

These initiatives directly benefit 11 Dumagat-Remontado families, comprising 63 community members, helping strengthen resilience while promoting sustainable living within the indigenous community.

Representing the Rotary Club of Mandaluyong was President Jethro Bañez, together with dedicated club members and their families: Service Projects Director PP Apollo Tan, SAG Oliver Salud, PP Mike Dela Cruz, Dir/PN Mao Kwan, Rtn. Newtein Sy, Spouse Elaine Dela Cruz, Spouse Jojo Bañez, René Jericha Bañez, and family friend Don Santos. Their presence highlighted the Rotary spirit of service and fellowship that drives impactful community initiatives.

The event was further honored by the presence of President Amor Pagulayan of the Rotary Club of Rodriguez, demonstrating inter-club solidarity and shared commitment in serving indigenous communities.

A key partner in this endeavor was Solar Hope, which ensured the successful installation of 11 solar household kits and a streetlight, along with providing the necessary orientation on proper care and maintenance. Through their technical expertise and dedication to renewable energy solutions, Solar Hope helped bring sustainable lighting directly into each household—enhancing safety, quality of life, and productivity for the beneficiary families.

As the sun set over Sitio Maislap, Project SILAW stood as a beacon of light—both literal and symbolic—signifying a brighter and more sustainable future for the Dumagat-Remontado community. More than a progressive service project, the turnover marked the beginning of a strengthened partnership grounded in dignity, shared responsibility, and a collective commitment to nurturing the land, uplifting families, and creating opportunities for generations to come.

Tulong-tulong. Sama-sama.
