Healing Hearts, Transforming Futures: How Rotary Changed 100 Young Lives

In the bustling hospitals of Vietnam, a quiet miracle has been unfolding, one tiny heartbeat at a time. Over the past two years, the Rotary Club of Saigon International (RCSI) has been at the forefront of a life-saving mission, transforming the futures of 100 children through two strategic Global Grant projects for pediatric congenital heart surgeries.

The surgeries under the Global Grants for Pediatric Congenital Heart Surgeries, stand as a testament to Rotary’s enduring mission: advancing health, restoring hope, and uplifting communities through compassionate service.

The journey began with Global Grant GG2349276, an initiative that funded surgeries for 30 children with congenital heart disease. Each case represented a life interrupted—children who could not run, play, or breathe freely, and parents who navigated fear and uncertainty every second of the day. The grant offered these families a lifeline, providing diagnostics, surgery, recovery support, and family counseling to ensure holistic healing.

Building on the success of the first grant, Global Grant GG2457858 expanded the reach of RCSI’s mission and delivered 70 additional life-saving surgeries. In partnership with the VinaCapital Foundation, local hospitals and healthcare professionals, the group created a system for identifying eligible patients, managing cases transparently, and ensuring comprehensive follow-up care.

Rotarians, social workers, doctors and health advocates spent countless hours volunteer raising funds, reviewing medical cases, coordinating logistics, comforting parents, and visiting hospitals. Their involvement was hands-on and heartfelt.

The impact of these global grants is a profound as every act of donation to The Rotary Foundation.

“The club only needs to generate 1,400USD per child and the rest of the cost will be matched by the VinaCapital Foundation and the social insurance of the government. Few projects offer such immediate and profound change,” shared Hoa Nguyen, public image chairperson and 2026 president-elect.

Children who once faced fragile, limited lives are now thriving, able to run, play, and dream of a future filled with possibility. They attend school more consistently, play with confidence, and dream bigger dreams. The emotional and financial shackles that burdened their families have been broken, replaced by hope and stability.

Reflecting on the journey, John Bayarong, 2024-2025 president of RCSI shared: “When you look into the eyes of a mother as her child is wheeled into surgery, you see a universe of fear. And then, hours later, when the surgeon announces a success, that fear dissolves into a joy so pure it fills the entire room. Knowing I contributed to the transformation of fear to hope for 100 families—that is the true privilege of my Rotary service.”

The projects also strengthened trust and collaboration between Rotary and Vietnam’s healthcare sector. Local hospitals enhanced their capacity, communities became more aware of congenital heart conditions, and Rotary’s public image grew through visible, high-impact service.

Today, the beat of 100 healthy hearts across Vietnam echoes the essence of Rotary service. Through these global grants, the Rotary Club of Saigon International has not only saved lives—it has shaped futures, strengthened communities, and demonstrated how compassion becomes action when Rotarians unite for good.

These children now carry forward not just repaired hearts, but a renewed chance at life. Each surgery was more than a procedure—it was a hope restored.
