For more than fifteen years, the Gift of Life program of the Rotary Club of San Juan West has stood as one of the club’s most meaningful and enduring humanitarian initiatives—bringing hope, healing, and a second chance at life to children born with congenital heart disease.
Conceived with the mission of helping indigent pediatric patients in need of life-saving cardiac care, the program provides critical assistance for medical procedures such as heart surgeries and other specialized treatments. For many families who would otherwise be unable to afford such care, the program has become a lifeline.
Through the years, the club has actively built partnerships with fellow Rotary clubs and partner organizations both locally and internationally. These collaborations help mobilize the financial resources and medical support required for complex heart operations. Beyond the surgeries themselves, the program also addresses the often-overlooked needs of patients and their families—supporting medicines, post-operative care, and temporary accommodations for families after hospital discharge while children await follow-up consultations.
In addition to projects supported through Rotary’s global grants, the club continues to expand its reach by working closely with grassroots advocates. In the current Rotary year, special attention has also been given to heart patients coming from distant communities. One notable collaboration is with the Heart Warriors of Ifugao, which has enabled the club to extend assistance to patients from remote areas such as Banawe, Ifugao. In one instance in September last year, the club partnered with the Heart Warriors of Ifugao for a “Concert for A Cause” project in Banaue to raise funds in support of the advocacy. Since the start of the “Unite for Good” Rotary Year, the club has already supported eight (8) beneficiary patients from Ifugao, and this number may reach around ten (10) patients by the end of the Rotary Year.
This collective effort demonstrates the power of community partnership. Local government units provide vital logistical support, including ambulance transportation for patients traveling long distances. Meanwhile, guarantee support from other national and local public officials help facilitate access to services at the Philippine Heart Center, where dedicated doctors generously offer their expertise and voluntary medical services.
Through the convergence of compassionate leadership, community collaboration, and medical excellence, lives continue to be transformed.
This Rotary Year, the Gift of Life initiative stands as one of the enduring legacies of Good President Emman Caguimbal, whose leadership has strengthened the club’s commitment to humanitarian service. The project is chaired by Past District Governor Augie Soliman, whose stewardship continues to guide the program’s mission of restoring hope and saving lives.
Indeed, through Gift of Life, the Rotary Club of San Juan West continues to live out Rotary’s enduring promise: Service Above Self—one healed heart at a time.
