Gumugulong ang Pag-asa (Cycle of HOPE): Empowering Families Through Sustainable Livelihood

In many communities, opportunity often arrives in small but meaningful ways—sometimes even on wheels. This is the story behind Gumugulong ang Pag-asa (Cycle of HOPE), a district grant project of the Rotary Club of Ortigas Center, designed to provide dignified and sustainable livelihood to families of its scholars.

With a total project cost of $1,500, the initiative centers on a simple yet powerful idea: equip parents with the means to earn, and support them as they build a stable source of income.

Through this project, four beneficiaries each received a fully equipped mobile food cart—complete with a bicycle and sidecar, a small gas stove range, and essential supplies

needed to start their micro-enterprise.

More than just tools for livelihood, these carts symbolize mobility, resilience, and hope. Each one represents a family’s step toward financial independence.

The carts have since taken on their own identities through the businesses they carry: Batchi's Lugaw Overload, Rolling Rice, Golden Food Buddy, and Arlene's Rice Scramble. During the Zone 6 Talent Night rehearsals, these mobile food carts drew positive attention from attendees, with their offerings spread well appreciated. Notably, District Governor Gina expressed her support by reserving them for the Governor’s Ball final rehearsals, providing the beneficiaries with an early opportunity to serve a larger audience.

However, Cycle of HOPE goes beyond initial assistance. Recognizing that sustainability requires more than capital, the project integrates continuous capacity-building. Beneficiaries will periodically undergo training in financial literacy, basic marketing skills, and food sanitation and preparation. These sessions aim to strengthen not only their business knowledge but also their confidence as entrepreneurs.

A key feature of the program is its built-in sustainability mechanism. Each cart owner commits to setting aside a portion of their monthly gross sales into a shared Sustainability Fund. This fund will serve as a resource for maintenance and repairs of the carts, as well as for unforeseen expenses—ensuring that the project remains self-sustaining in the long run.

The success of this initiative is made possible through strong collaboration. The club partnered with the Pasig ICC Soup Kitchen, a Rotary Community Corp of RCOC for more than two decades, whose grassroots presence and community engagement helped bring the project to life and ensured that the support reaches those who need it most.

The blessing and turnover ceremony took place last February 28, 2026, during the 34th Charter Anniversary celebration of the Rotary Club of Ortigas Center. The event was not only a milestone for the club but also a meaningful moment for the beneficiary families—marking the beginning of a new chapter in their journey.

Gumugulong ang Pag-asa reflects Rotary’s enduring commitment to service above self. By combining livelihood support, skills development, and a sustainable framework, the project

demonstrates how thoughtful interventions can create lasting impact. More importantly, it shows that when communities are empowered with the right tools and guidance, hope does not remain static—it moves forward, one cycle at a time.
