Crossing Borders for Community: A Day of Service in Burwood

As a member of the Rotary Club of Antipolo City in the Philippines serving as the President-Elect / Vice President, I have always believed that the heart of Rotary is its ability to connect people across oceans. Today, January 23, 2026, I had the privilege of seeing this global connection in action during my vacation to Australia.

I was honored to be invited by the Rotary Club of Burwood to celebrate and support a significant local milestone: the Australian Citizenship Ceremony. This event, held in partnership with the Burwood Council, welcomed new citizens into the community, a moment filled with hope, pride, and a deep sense of belonging.

Why International Fellowship Matters

Participating in this project reminded me that while our clubs may be thousands of miles apart, our mission remains the same. Whether we are in the Philippines or Australia, we are all working toward the same goal: strengthening the fabric of our communities.

Observing how the Rotary Club of Burwood collaborates with their local government provided me with valuable insights. The event saw strong support from government officials such as Mayor John Faker, the longest-serving Mayor of Burwood Council; Jason Yat-Sen Li, MP, a local State Member.

Seeing these leaders stand alongside Rotarians underscored a powerful lesson: Service is most effective when we build strong partnerships with our local institutions.

Small Contributions, Big Impact

During the ceremony, I assisted in small but meaningful ways. It was a humbling experience to witness the joy on the faces of the new citizens.

It reinforced my belief that "Service Above Self" is a universal language. You don't need to be a local member to make a difference; you just need a willing heart and a spirit of cooperation.

For my fellow Rotarians back home and around the world, I encourage you to reach out to local clubs whenever you travel. These visits are opportunities to exchange ideas, learn new service models, and bring fresh inspiration back to your home club.
