In the quiet corners of Barangay San Miguel, Pasig City, there are 126 bedridden senior citizens whose worlds have been reduced to the four walls of their rooms. For many of them, each day is a silent struggle—physically limited, often dependent, and at times, unseen. Recognizing this reality, the Rotary Club of Valle Verde (RCVV) in partnership with San Miguel Pasig Seniors Citizenry, Inc. launched ARUGA, a heartfelt initiative rooted in compassion, dignity, and holistic care.
“ARUGA,” meaning care and nurture, goes beyond the traditional concept of outreach. It is nurturing with heart and presence—a program that delivers not only assistance, but genuine human connection.
Each ARUGA visit is thoughtfully designed to address the seniors’ physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. Volunteers come bearing simple pasalubong—small tokens that bring joy and remind beneficiaries that they are remembered. More importantly, they bring time: time to listen, to engage in kuwentuhan, and to share meaningful moments that uplift the spirit.
The program also ensures that the seniors’ health and well-being are closely monitored. Basic check-ups are conducted, vital signs are recorded, and observations about their condition are carefully documented. These reports are then shared with ARUGA partners to enable a more coordinated response to their ongoing medical and support needs.
Beyond the patients themselves, ARUGA extends its care to their families and caregivers—the silent heroes who tirelessly attend to their loved ones day and night.
Through kumustahan conversations, the program provides encouragement, emotional support, and recognition of their sacrifices.
An equally important aspect of ARUGA is the assessment of the seniors’ living conditions. Volunteers take time to observe their immediate surroundings, ensuring that their small living spaces remain safe, comfortable, and conducive to their condition. Even the simplest improvements can make a significant difference in their daily lives.
At its core, ARUGA also nurtures the spiritual well-being of each beneficiary. By fostering a deeper connection with God, the program offers hope, peace, and a renewed sense of purpose—even in the face of illness and limitation. It is a gentle reminder that their lives remain meaningful and that their journey, though difficult, is never without grace.
Through ARUGA, the Rotary Club of Valle Verde reaffirms its commitment to service above self—bringing light into the lives of those who need it most. More than a project, ARUGA is a movement of compassion, restoring dignity, strengthening faith, and inspiring gratitude among the most vulnerable members of the community.
Because even in stillness, every life deserves to be seen, heard, and cared for.
