UNITE for SIGHT: When Service Brings Vision, Dignity, and Hope Closer to Home

In communities where access to healthcare remains a daily challenge, the ability to see clearly is often taken for granted—until it is slowly lost. For many senior citizens, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and economically vulnerable families, poor eyesight does not only limit vision; it restricts mobility, livelihood, independence, and dignity. Responding to this silent yet pervasive need, the Rotary Club of East Rizal launched its flagship health initiative, UNITE for SIGHT: Eye Care for a Brighter Future, a project that embodies the very essence of Rotary service—compassion in action, service beyond borders, and care delivered where it is needed most.

Anchored in the global theme and values of Rotary International, UNITE for SIGHT stands on a simple but powerful belief: services should not be sought—they should be brought to the people. Guided by this conviction, the Rotary Club of East Rizal committed itself to removing the barriers that often prevent communities from accessing essential eye care, especially among senior citizens and PWDs who face mobility, financial, and informational constraints.

A Humble Beginning with a Powerful Purpose

UNITE for SIGHT was first implemented on November 22, 2025, in Cuenca Ville, Sitio PAGRAI Hills, Barangay Mayamot, Antipolo City. What began as a community-based outreach quickly revealed the depth of unmet need. On its inaugural run alone, 108 patients received free eye check-ups, while 47 were immediately scheduled for free cataract operations in the week that followed. For many, it was their first professional eye consultation in years—some, in decades.

Yet behind this promising start lies a deeply personal story that shaped the soul of the project. One of the club’s members had a father who was scheduled for a free cataract operation with the same partner organization in October 2025. Tragically, the procedure never happened. The father passed away due to another illness before his scheduled operation. From this painful loss emerged a shared realization: time, access, and proximity matter. When healthcare is delayed or difficult to reach, opportunities for healing are lost. UNITE for SIGHT was born from this moment—not just as a medical mission, but as a commitment to act sooner, go farther, and reach deeper into communities.

Taking Eye Care Directly to the People

Since its launch, UNITE for SIGHT has grown into a sustained and far-reaching service initiative. To date, the project has already provided free eye check-ups to 872 patients, with 264 individuals scheduled for free cataract, glaucoma, and pterygium (surfer’s eye) operations. These life-changing procedures were made possible through the steadfast partnership with Cornel Medical Center in Antipolo City and in close coordination with the Local Government Unit of Antipolo City.

Each outreach activity brought Rotary service closer to neighborhoods, schools, covered courts, and community centers—spaces familiar and accessible to residents. On December 6, 2025, at Dalig 2 Covered Court, Barangay Dalig, 101 patients were examined, and 45 were scheduled for surgery. January 17, 2026, followed in Sitio Bagong Purok, Barangay San Jose, with another 101 patients served and 27 scheduled for operations.

The momentum continued on January 24, 2026, at San Ysiro Elementary School, Barangay San Jose, where 120 patients received free eye care and 31 were listed for surgical procedures. February proved especially impactful. On February 13, 2026, at the BN1 Conference Court, Cluster I, Bagong Nayon 1, 171 patients were examined, with 41 scheduled for surgery. The following day, February 14, in Sitio Robinsons Homes East, Barangay San Jose, 71 patients were served and 18 were scheduled. On February 21, 2026, UNITE for SIGHT extended its reach beyond Antipolo—serving 110 patients in Jala-Jala, Rizal, with 26 scheduled for operations, and another 90 patients in PCUP RPG Ville Ondoy Village, with 29 scheduled.

These numbers represent more than statistics. They reflect restored independence for elders who can once again read, walk safely, and recognize loved ones. They signify renewed confidence for individuals who had resigned themselves to fading sight. Above all, they demonstrate how timely intervention can transform lives.

Rotary Fellowship in Action

UNITE for SIGHT is not a solitary endeavor. It is a testament to what Rotary can achieve when fellowship turns into collective action. Recognizing the project’s impact and sustainability, numerous Rotary Clubs within District 3800 have joined hands with the Rotary Club of East Rizal to expand the reach of this initiative.

Among those who have partnered in this service are the Rotary Club of Antipolo East, Rotary Club of Rizal Mideast, Rotary Club of Metro Cainta, Rotary Club of Rizal Premier, Rotary Club of Rizal Centro, Rotary Club of Rizal Urban, Rotary Club of Lakeshore Rizal, Rotary Club of Baras, Rotary Club of Teresa, Rotary Club of Angono, Rotary Club of Morong, Rotary Club of Cardona, Rotary Club of Antipolo City, Rotary Club of Metro East Taytay, Rotary Club of Taytay Renaissance, Rotary Club of Tres Escalon Taytay, Rotary Club of Upper East Side Antipolo, and the Rotaract Club of Paraiso ng Rizal.

This growing alliance reflects Rotary’s enduring strength: a network of service-driven leaders united by a common purpose. Through shared resources, manpower, and advocacy, UNITE for SIGHT has evolved into a district-wide movement—one that amplifies impact while strengthening inter-club collaboration.

Beyond Medical Care: Restoring Dignity and Hope

What sets UNITE for SIGHT apart is its holistic approach. The project does not merely diagnose and refer; it accompanies patients through the process—from check-up to surgery scheduling—ensuring that fear, cost, and logistics do not stand in the way of healing. By bringing services directly into communities, Rotary removes the burden of transportation, long queues, and uncertainty that often discourage patients from seeking care.

For senior citizens and PWDs, this approach is transformative. It affirms their worth and recognizes their right to accessible healthcare. It sends a powerful message: that they are seen, valued, and supported—not forgotten.

Looking Ahead: A Vision That Endures

As UNITE for SIGHT continues, the Rotary Club of East Rizal remains committed to sustaining and expanding the project. Upcoming schedules are already set, it’s the 9th and 1oth leg, for Sitio Kamatisan, Barangay Dalig on March 21, 2026, and Sitio Kaila, Barangay San Roque on March 28, 2026—ensuring that more communities will benefit from this life-changing service.

The club’s hope is clear: that UNITE for SIGHT will not end with a single Rotary year, but will be carried forward by future leaders, partners, and Rotarians who believe in service that heals, uplifts, and empowers. In every restored vision lies a restored future—and in every outreach, Rotary proves once again that when we unite for sight, we truly unite for good.
