From an early age, Dr. Maricel Borromeo Amores, learned that service is not just an action—it is a way of living. It became a core part of who she was, shaping her through every triumph, setback, and lesson learned. In her school days, the concept of helping others was instilled as not just a responsibility, but a privilege. Little did she know, that lesson would grow into a lifelong commitment guiding her every step.
When her late husband, Atty. Ernesto Amores, introduced her to Rotary, she was drawn not only to its humanitarian goals but also to the deep bond of fellowship it offered. His passion for Rotary was infectious, and his leadership in the Rotary Club of Cebu East opened her eyes to the power of service. It was about building relationships and communities, not simply doing good. But life, as it often does, had other plans.
On 7 February 2004, Maricel's world shattered when her husband fell critically ill. Despite the overwhelming support of the Rotary community—who stood by with prayers and even blood donations—he passed away the following day. The pain of loss was immense, but in that grief, Maricel experienced something profound: the strength of service. The outpouring of love from the Rotary family reminded her that, even in the darkest of times, they are never truly alone. This realization became her anchor during those tough days.
Grief didn’t simply fade away. With two young sons to raise, the pain lingered, but it was in continuing her husband’s legacy through Rotary that Maricel found healing. Each act of service became a step toward moving forward, a way to honor his life.
ROTARY CLUB OF CEBU FUENTE
The Rotary Club of Cebu Fuente became her new family. It was a moment she would always cherish when Past District Governor Mary Anne Alcordo Solomon invited her to one of their meetings.
That meeting became the catalyst for a deeper connection with Rotary. What began as a simple invitation led her to join the club, not just as a member, but as someone eager to contribute, serve, and carry forward the legacy of compassion.
Over the years, Maricel had the privilege of taking on various roles within the club and district—President, GML Chair, Assistant Governor, and DGR-PRM. These roles allowed her to witness firsthand the incredible impact Rotary has on the lives of others, whether through medical missions, rebuilding shelters, or providing support for vulnerable women and children. She learned that true service is not defined by grand gestures, but by countless small acts of kindness that create real change.
One of the greatest joys of her life has been watching her two sons, Atty. Ernesto Miguel “Erl” Borromeo Amores and Atty. Carlos Alfonso “Don” Borromeo Amores, embrace the values of service and compassion. Don made history at the age of 14 as the youngest-ever Interact
Representative for District 3860, a milestone that filled Maricel’s heart with pride and happily married to Angelica Espina. Erl, now a Rotarian, continues the legacy of service that began with his father and is an integral part of the club’s efforts.
Achievements, whether earning five degrees while being a working student and graduating Summa cum Laude, or receiving the Most Outstanding Rotarian award, are moments Maricel treasures. Yet, these accolades do not define her. What truly matters, she believes, is how one uses their talents to uplift others. As an HR Consultant and CEO of FONTIS-ICAN CORP, she’s seen firsthand how education and service combine to unlock potential. It’s not about what we achieve for ourselves, but what we help others achieve through our knowledge, skills, and time.
Rotary has rewritten Maricel’s life. The recognition she’s received, including six-time Most Outstanding Rotarian honor, accolades, and award from Vice President Leni Robredo, are meaningful, but the true fulfillment comes from knowing the work they’ve done—no matter how small—has had a lasting impact on others.
Reflecting on her journey, Maricel recognizes how Rotary has transformed her life. It’s not just a place of purpose—it’s a community that helped her rebuild, teaching her that even in times of loss, we have the power to change lives through service. As she looks to the future, she feels hope and excitement for the work that still lies ahead. She’s proud of the work they’ve done, the lives they’ve touched, and the communities they’ve built, but she knows the journey is far from over.
Rotary has rewritten her story, and she will continue to write new chapters—one act of service at a time.
Life became even more holistic for Maricel when she joined the Third Order Carmelites Discalced (TOCD). It was there that she discovered a deeper, spiritual dimension of service—one that mirrors the values of Rotary but rooted in contemplation, prayer, and spiritual growth.
Being part of TOCD has allowed her to experience service not just in the community, but also in the silence of prayer, strengthening the foundation upon which she serves others. It is in this balance of action and spirituality that she has truly found peace, purpose, and completeness in her journey.
