Demonstrating its commitment to environmental stewardship and community welfare, the Rotary Club of Western Pampanga (RCWP) launched the Grand River Desilting Project: Desilting and Declogging of the Drainage Channel on October 11, 2025, at the San Matias River Drainage Channel in Guagua, Pampanga. In partnership with the Municipality of Guagua and fully funded by RCWP, the initiative was led by President Joselito Lim together with fellow Rotarians. The project forms part of Rotary’s Area of Focus on Protecting the Environment, highlighting the club’s dedication to creating sustainable solutions that benefit both people and nature.
The large-scale environmental undertaking aimed to restore the capacity of the drainage channel by removing accumulated silt, debris, and obstructions that hinder water flow. By improving the condition of the river channel, the project helps reduce flooding risks in nearby communities, enhances water flow and quality, and strengthens disaster resilience for the municipality’s approximately 138,000 residents. The initiative serves as a proactive measure to address environmental concerns while safeguarding lives, properties, and livelihoods.
Beyond its immediate impact on flood mitigation, the project has also contributed to the gradual restoration of the local ecosystem. Observations made two months after the cleanup indicated improved river conditions, with local fishermen once again able to catch fish from the river channel. More than a cleanup activity, the Grand River Desilting Project represents RCWP’s long-term commitment to environmental protection and community development, creating lasting benefits for present and future generations in Guagua.
