Rotary Club of Cebu Gloria Maris Shares Smiles with Carreta Learning Centre Children

A Portrait of Joy: When a Simple Photo Becomes a Treasure

The room filled with quiet anticipation as the children gathered inside the modest learning center in Carreta, Cebu. Small hands fidgeted, curious eyes watched every movement, and soft laughter rippled through the room. Then the moment arrived—the photographs were handed out.

A child looked down at the glossy portrait, paused, and slowly broke into a wide smile. In that instant, a simple photograph became something far greater—it became recognition, dignity, and a memory the children could hold in their hands.

On February 7, the Rotary Club of Cebu Gloria Maris brought a day of warmth and celebration to the children of Carreta Learning Centre through a meaningful portrait-sharing activity. The portraits were lovingly captured by fellow Rotarians from the Daegu Murim Rotary Club of Korea during their visit to Cebu. Weeks later, those images returned—not as files or prints tucked away in albums, but as gifts placed directly into the hands of the children themselves.

For many of the children, it was the first time they had ever received a portrait of their own.

Moments That Matter

Carreta Learning Centre, operated by Daredemo Hero Inc., a Japanese volunteer organization dedicated to serving vulnerable communities in Cebu, has long been a sanctuary for children from challenging circumstances. Inside its colorful walls, education, mentorship, and hope quietly shape brighter futures.

On that February morning, the center transformed into something even more special—a gallery of smiles and wonder.

As each child received their portrait, reactions unfolded in delightful waves. Some giggled shyly. Others held their photos tightly to their chests. A few studied their images carefully, as if discovering a new version of themselves reflected in the print.

For children who rarely see themselves celebrated, a portrait can quietly say what words sometimes cannot: “You matter.”

Rotary Club of Cebu Gloria Maris members shared not only the photographs but also snacks, laughter, and warm fellowship. Cookies were passed around, stories were exchanged, and the room buzzed with the joyful energy that only children can create.

Present during the activity were President Roxene Rosario, Secretary Dothy Borces, Director Evelyn Mercader, and Assistant Secretary Jabe Maquiling. Together, they joined the children in the celebration—kneeling beside them, sharing smiles, and witnessing the heartfelt reactions as the portraits were revealed.

A Global Rotary Connection

The portraits themselves carried a deeper story of international fellowship. They were captured by visiting Rotarians from Daegu Murim Rotary Club in Korea, whose visit to Cebu strengthened bonds between clubs across borders.

The photographs were not merely images—they represented a connection between communities thousands of miles apart.

From Korea to Cebu, from camera lenses to small hands clutching treasured prints, the journey of these portraits reflected the true spirit of Rotary: service that transcends distance, culture, and language.

Through a single photograph, two Rotary communities came together to remind children that the world is larger—and kinder—than they may realize.

Why This Project Matters

For Rotary Club of Cebu Gloria Maris, projects like these resonate deeply with the club’s heart and mission. While large-scale initiatives often draw attention, it is often the simplest gestures that create the most lasting impact.

A photograph may seem small, yet for a child growing up in difficult circumstances, it can symbolize identity, belonging, and self-worth.

Members of the club recognize that nurturing confidence and joy among children can shape the way they see themselves—and the futures they dare to imagine.

The Carreta Learning Centre activity reflected the club’s commitment to creating meaningful moments of encouragement for young lives. It also reinforced the importance of Rotary fellowship—where collaboration between clubs can turn small acts into powerful experiences.

A Day They Will Remember

As the activity drew to a close, the children continued admiring their portraits. Some compared photos with friends, others carefully tucked them into notebooks or folders to take home.

The room slowly quieted, but the smiles remained.

Outside, the busy streets of Carreta carried on as usual. Yet inside the learning center, something gentle and lasting had been planted—a reminder to each child that their story matters.

And sometimes, all it takes to begin believing that… is a photograph.

“A photograph may fade with time, but the feeling of being seen and valued can last a lifetime.”
