RC New Manila East Trains QC Barangay Health Workers in Community-Based Medical Care

Quezon City barangay health workers are now better equipped to handle first aid, emergency response, and dermatological health concerns following an series of training programs conducted by the Rotary Club of New Manila East (RCNME) at the Qurino Memorial Medical Center and Barangay Bahay Toro last December 2024, the Rotary International Disease and Prevention Month.

The initiative, known as Project AID (Awareness, Instruction & Development of Barangay Health Workers), provided first contact community healthcare providers with critical skills and medical knowledge to improve healthcare services at the grassroots level. With local health workers often serving as the first responders in their communities, the training aimed to enhance their ability to address medical emergencies and provide early intervention for common skin and hair diseases.

Medical Experts Lead Training on First Aid, Emergency Response, and Dermatology

The training, led by Dermatologist Dr. Diana Nisce of the Skin and Cancer Foundation, and Surgeon Dr. Ralph Axel Yabes of Ospital ng Makati, covered essential medical topics designed to boost the capabilities of barangay health workers in resource-limited settings.

Participants received hands-on instruction in:

Basic First Aid & Emergency Care - Immediate response techniques for injuries, burns, and common medical emergencies.

Dermatological Health & Skin Disease Management - Recognizing and treating skin and hair conditions prevalent in urban communities.

Crisis Response & Patient Stabilization - Best practices for handling medical cases before hospital referral.

Dr. Yabes underscored the critical role of local health workers in community healthcare, stating, “Barangay health workers serve as the first point of contact for many patients. By providing them with this training, we are ensuring that more people receive proper care at the earliest stage.”

Strengthening Public Health in Quezon City

Project AID aligns with Rotary International’s focus on Disease Prevention and Treatment, reinforcing RCNME’s commitment to improving healthcare accessibility. The program ensures that barangay health workers are better prepared to handle emergencies and provide informed medical guidance, reducing the strain on hospitals and clinics.

“Empowering community health workers means strengthening our entire healthcare system,” RCNME President Karlo Benjamin Nisce emphasized. “These individuals are on the front lines of public health, and by investing in their skills, we are investing in the well-being of the communities they serve.”

With a growing need for trained first responders in urban centers, the success of Project AID signals RCNME’s ongoing efforts to support sustainable and community-driven healthcare initiatives. Plans are already in motion to expand the program, ensuring that more barangay health workers across Metro Manila receive the knowledge, confidence, and resources needed to save lives.
