In line with its commitment to environmental sustainability, the Rotary Club of Aseana Manila joined a field learning activity led by Alcom Carbon Markets Philippines Inc., in partnership with the Provincial Government of Nueva Ecija, to explore the role of biochar in agriculture and climate adaptation.
Held shortly after the club launched its flagship project, “Tree Planting for Climate Adaptation and Food Security,” the visit served as an opportunity to deepen the technical understanding behind sustainable land management. The project, which will cover 200 hectares of coconut trees in Fort Magsaysay, is envisioned not only as a reforestation initiative but as a long-term food and livelihood source for Filipino communities.
Biochar—produced by heating agricultural waste under low oxygen conditions—is gaining global recognition for its dual role in improving soil fertility and sequestering carbon. When used in reforestation and farming, it enhances water retention, reduces the need for synthetic fertilizers, and helps trap carbon in the soil for centuries.
For experienced Rotarians, the value of integrating such science-based solutions into Rotary projects is clear: it elevates impact from temporary to transformative. With this new knowledge, the club now explores how biochar can be applied in the early phases of their tree planting initiative—to ensure better seedling survival, healthier soil, and a more climate-resilient farming ecosystem.
Rotary Club of Aseana Manila’sparticipation in this learning activity reflects a maturing approach to service—where planting a tree is not the finish line, but the first step in designing regenerative, replicable solutions for the future.
With initiatives like this, Rotary continues to prove that the most effective service is that which is informed, collaborative, and future-facing.
