From Swaddle to Safety: Polio Shield for Mothers and Babies of Bontoc
For many parents, the greatest gift they can receive is the assurance that their children are healthy, protected, and given the best possible start in life. With this vision in mind, the Rotary Club of Marikina West launched “From Swaddle to Safety: Polio Shield for Mothers and Babies of Bontoc,” an initiative that reached 160 mothers and their babies, providing both life-saving immunization and essential infant care support.
Spearheaded by High Impact President Katrina Frances Evasco of the Rotary Club of Marikina West, the project responded to two of the most pressing needs of young families—protecting infants against preventable diseases and helping mothers care for their children during the crucial early months of life.
At the heart of the initiative was the administration of 160 polio vaccines for babies aged 0 to 12 months. While polio has become increasingly rare, it remains a disease that demands continued vigilance. Every child vaccinated represents another step toward safeguarding the community against preventable illness and ensuring that children can grow and thrive without the threat of lifelong disability.
Health protection, however, was only one part of the mission.
Understanding that raising a child also comes with financial and emotional challenges, the Rotary Club distributed baby care essentials to all 160 mother-and-baby beneficiaries. Each family received baby swaddles, diapers, and baby pillows that can continue to be used as children grow into their toddler years. These practical items not only provide comfort and support but also help ease everyday expenses for parents, allowing them to focus more on nurturing their children’s development.
The success of the project was strengthened through the invaluable partnership of the Department of Health (DOH) Bontoc and the unwavering support of Mayor Franklin C. Odsey. Their collaboration ensured that the vaccination campaign and distribution of supplies were carried out efficiently and reached the families who needed them most.
More than a healthcare mission, the initiative reflected Rotary’s enduring belief that meaningful service begins by addressing the real needs of communities. By combining preventive healthcare with practical assistance, the project created an immediate impact while laying the foundation for healthier families and stronger communities.
For the 160 mothers and 160 babies who benefited from the program, the initiative represented more than receiving vaccines and baby supplies—it was a reminder that they are valued, supported, and not alone in their journey of parenthood.
“From Swaddle to Safety” stands as a testament to what can be achieved when compassion, leadership, and collaboration come together in service of others. Through the dedication of the Rotary Club of Marikina West, under the leadership of Ms. Katrina Frances Evasco, and in partnership with the Department of Health Bontoc and Mayor Franklin C. Odsey, the project delivered more than assistance—it delivered hope, protection, and a healthier beginning for the next generation of Bontoc.
Accompanying President Katrina at the project venue were Immediate Past President Kevin Micole Delfino and Ms. Krizelle Megu, Past President Johann Erickson Evasco, and Past President Rey John Fantone and Spouse Nora.
