Service Above Self has long guided Rotarians in responding to community needs and advancing humanitarian causes. As societies face complex and interconnected challenges, the definition of service continues to evolve, inviting reflection on how compassion can extend to all forms of life. The initiative of the Rotary Club of Mandaluyong Uptown to advocate for including animal welfare among Rotary’s Areas of Focus reflects a thoughtful, values-driven response. Anchored in the belief that animals are creations of the Almighty and essential to the balance of the natural world, the club recognizes that caring for them is not merely an act of kindness but a responsibility that sustains the ecosystem of life.
This commitment was expressed through a collaborative outreach activity with the Club’s Rotary Community Corps (RCC) partner Pawssion Project, project partner The Mighty Pets, and the Club’s Rotaractors. Volunteers spent a meaningful day bathing and caring for fifty rescued dogs at the Pawssion Project Bulacan shelter. Many of these animals had suffered abandonment, neglect, or abuse prior to rescue. Through grooming, feeding, and providing comfort, Rotarians and volunteers restored dignity to living beings often overlooked, while fostering awareness that compassion transcends species and strengthens the moral fabric of communities.
The significance of such initiatives becomes clearer when viewed against the broader reality faced by stray animals. International organizations, including World Health Organization and World Animal Protection, estimate approximately two hundred million stray dogs worldwide. (Source: https://www.four-paws.org/campaigns-topics/topics/help-for-stray-animals/stray- animals-pets-without-a-home) In the Philippines, local government units and animal welfare groups report more than twelve million stray dogs and cats. These animals often endure hunger, disease, injury, and exposure to harsh conditions, while their growing numbers present public health and safety concerns. The Club promotes advocacy messages that encourage humane and preventive action. The campaign “Kapon, Huwag Itapon” emphasizes population management as a compassionate and effective strategy. Likewise, “Adopt, Don’t Shop” encourages families to provide homes for rescued animals rather than purchasing pets. These initiatives reflect long-term solutions grounded in empathy, accountability, and community participation.
Not everyone may be able to adopt, yet opportunities for service remain accessible to all. Volunteering at shelters, supporting rescue initiatives, raising awareness, or donating resources can significantly improve the lives of abandoned animals. The Pawssion Project’s guiding message reminds all:
"Adopt, if you can't adopt - foster,
if you can't foster - volunteer,
If you can't volunteer - donate,
If you can't donate - educate."

By advocating for animal welfare as an Area of Focus, the Rotary Club of Mandaluyong Uptown invites a broader understanding of service—one that recognizes the interconnectedness of human well-being, environmental sustainability, and care for all living creatures. In nurturing care for the voiceless, Rotarians cultivate empathy and stewardship, strengthening communities and safeguarding the shared world. Through initiatives like these, Rotary continues to affirm its mission of building a more compassionate and harmonious future for generations to come.
