Beyond the Uniform: Building Confidence, Friendship, and Hope Through Taekwondo

New Balanban Elementary School — August 26, 2026. For the young Taekwondo learners of New Balanban Elementary School, an ordinary training day became a memorable celebration of friendship, generosity, and hope.

On August 26, the Rotary Club of Tagum North, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Godeok, District 3620, and the Southern Mindanao Korean Association, brought more than just sports equipment to the school. They brought encouragement, support, and a reminder to the children that their dreams and efforts matter.

The service activity provided 52 pieces of Dobok, the traditional Taekwondo uniform, to young learners who are pursuing the discipline and values of the martial art. The groups also donated three Balikbayan boxes filled with used clothing, along with burgers that added a welcome treat to the day's activities.

For the students, receiving their own Dobok was more than simply receiving a uniform. It represented an opportunity to train with pride and confidence and to see themselves as young athletes capable of discipline, perseverance, and achievement.

Taekwondo teaches far more than kicks and punches. It develops self-discipline, respect, focus, courage, and sportsmanship. For children growing up in a school community where resources can sometimes be limited, access to sports and proper training support can become an important avenue for personal growth and self-confidence.

The activity was led by Rotary Club of Tagum North President Robyn Nino D. Pereyras and District Treasurer Arnold M. Nicolas, together with Kevin Anh and the President and Vice President of the Southern Mindanao Korean Association.

Their presence underscored the power of collaboration. What began as a partnership between Rotary organizations and community supporters became a shared effort to invest in children not only as athletes, but as future leaders.

The donation of clothing also extended the reach of the initiative beyond the Taekwondo learners. The three Balikbayan boxes provided additional assistance to members of the school community, demonstrating that meaningful service can respond to different needs at the same time.

And, of course, there were burgers—bringing smiles and adding a simple but meaningful moment of fellowship between the young learners, school community, and visiting partners.

At the heart of the activity was the Rotary ideal of “Service Above Self.” The initiative demonstrated how service becomes more powerful when people and organizations come together with a common purpose.

Through Taekwondo, the children are learning to stand strong, remain disciplined, respect others, and never give up when faced with challenges. Through the generosity of the donors and partners, they were reminded that they do not have to pursue that journey alone.

The August 26 activity was therefore about much more than uniforms, clothing, or food. It was about building bridges between communities, strengthening friendships across borders, encouraging young athletes, and creating opportunities for children to believe in themselves.

As the young Taekwondo learners continue to train, each Dobok may become a symbol of something greater: the confidence to dream, the discipline to work toward those dreams, and the courage to face whatever challenges come their way.

With the continued spirit of cooperation among Rotary clubs, community organizations, and generous supporters, initiatives like this show how small acts of kindness can create lasting impressions in the lives of young people.

Together, we continue to promote Service Above Self not only through giving, but through friendship, sportsmanship, community service, and a commitment to developing the next generation.
