Rotary Brings Hope to CKD Patients with New Dialysis Machines for Pasay City General Hospital

Donation of Two (2) Dialysis Machines and One (1) Body Composition Machine to Pasay City General Hospital, Pasay City, Metro Manila

The prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) among Filipinos necessitating dialysis is on the rise, and the Philippine Society of Nephrology (PSN) is sounding the alarm. In an effort to combat this issue, they are urging individuals in the Philippines to prioritize kidney health, as while CKD can be managed, there is no complete cure through medications. Data obtained from the National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) reveals that approximately one Filipino develops chronic renal failure every hour, translating to roughly 120 Filipinos per million population annually (Philippine Society of Nephrology, 2024).

At least 7 million Filipinos are suffering from Chronic Kidney Disease (CDG) as of 2021, with one Filipino every hour getting the disease.  Only as few as 10% are diagnosed this means that the data of 7 million could be underestimated.

For Pasay City General Hospital, they have 12 dialysis machines, few of which are defective. Each machine can cater 4 to 5 patients per day.

Pasay City General Hospital caters not only to the residents of Pasay City, but whoever need the treatment. Patients will have to first go through screening with social services.  The social services will qualify if the patients are indigent and cannot afford private dialysis treatment.  Once qualified they are referred to the Nephrologist for the treatment protocol then they be referred to the dialysis center for actual treatment.  All charges are FREE.

There is no available census at present in the city of Pasay City on how many are suffering from CKD.  With the current data from the social services in the hospital, there are more than 200 patients in the wait list. To accommodate the other patients, Pasay City Gen Hospital will only do dialysis for patients for a maximum of 4 months.  After that, they are advised to look for other center for treatment to accommodate other patients in the waitlist.

This Global Grant project is hosted by The Rotary Club of Parañaque Central, Philippines (RID3830) and The Rotary Club of Borivli, India (RID3141) provided Two (2) Dialysis Machines and One (1) Body Composition Machine, which is use to assess fluid status and nutritional status, aiding in optimizing dialysis prescriptions and improving patient outcomes. The handover was done at the Pasay City General Hospital last March 1, 2025.
