RC Makati Dasmariñas partners with Rotaract Clubs to mount writing workshop for at-risk youth

Kanlungan sa Pasig became the vibrant venue for a remarkable one-day writing workshop and contest, aimed at nurturing creativity and self-expression among Children in Conflict with the Law (CICL) and Children at Risk (CAR).

The workshop, spearheaded by Rotarian Laurice Juarez, was facilitated by two esteemed educators: Ms. Ana Juarez-Macatangay and Ms. Michi Balmoria.

The event focused on teaching various styles of writing, offering a rich learning experience to the children. Through a series of lectures, interactive discussions, and hands-on writing activities, the participants were introduced to different forms of expression, including creative writing, narrative flow, and descriptive techniques.

Ms. Ana Juarez-Macatangay delved into the significance of language and style, emphasizing how tone, word choice, and structure shape compelling narratives. She guided the children through activities that honed their descriptive writing skills, helping them craft vivid and engaging pieces.

Ms. Michi Balmoria, on the other hand, led sessions that highlighted the importance of storytelling as a tool for self-reflection and communication. She inspired the children to channel their personal experiences into written pieces, allowing them to explore their emotions while honing their technical writing abilities.

The workshop culminated in a writing contest, where participants showcased their newfound skills. The entries were judged in five categories: (1) Creative Writing; (2) Language and Style; (3) Inspiring Story; (4) Narrative Flow and; (5) Descriptive Writing.

Selecting winners was no easy task, as each child poured their heart into their stories. Every piece reflected not only their personal experiences but also the resilience and hope that reside within them.

Ms. Juarez-Macatangay and Ms. Balmoria expressed their admiration for the children’s eagerness to learn and their openness in sharing their stories. They noted the emotional depth of the children's writing and acknowledged the healing potential of creative expression for the CICL and CAR participants.

The Contest and Winners

The workshop had a profound impact on everyone involved. It was clear that this event was not just about writing—it was about offering these young individuals a safe space to express their struggles and aspirations. It became a powerful reminder of the transformative potential of storytelling, both as an art form and as a tool for personal growth.

As the day came to a close, the facilitators left with a sense of fulfillment. They had witnessed the children not only improve their writing skills but also take significant steps toward emotional release and self-empowerment.
