The Art of Subduing: Jiu-Jitsu as a Path to Safety and Peacebuilding
Safety and security are essential to our lives, especially when faced with unforeseen
challenges that require quick thinking and protection. A study conducted by Mapua
University, School of Engineering, revealed that the Philippines currently experiences a
high average monthly crime rate of 30.76. Theft accounts for 31% of these crimes,
followed by physical injury, robbery, murder, rape, motorcycle theft, and homicide. While
many safety tools exist, such as Dial 911, whistles, pepper sprays, and batons, these may
not always be accessible in critical moments. This is where the importance of self-reliance
and personal safety skills comes into play.
Jiu-Jitsu, a martial art rooted in self-defense and grappling, provides individuals with
practical skills for protecting themselves in vulnerable situations. More than a sport, it
equips people of all ages with a deeper understanding of body mechanics, balance, and
leverage, allowing even a smaller person to control or neutralize a stronger opponent
without relying on brute force. For centuries, Jiu-Jitsu has been recognized not only as a
method for self-defense but also as a means of developing mental discipline, patience,
and resilience.
Empowering the Youth Through Jiu-Jitsu
The Rotary Club of Makati Dasmariñas, in partnership with its youth clubs, the Rotaract
Club of Arellano University and the Rotaract Club of Changebringers, has extended their
commitment to promoting peacebuilding among 20 young individuals. This initiative was
brought to life at Kanlungan sa Pasig, a facility that serves as a refuge for children in conflict with the law (CICL) and children at risk (CAR). By engaging these youth in Jiu-
Jitsu sessions, they are not only being taught self-defense but also invaluable life lessons.
Led by Peacebuilding Chair Adrian a certified instructor, the Jiu-Jitsu sessions focused on
fostering respect, discipline, and empathy. These qualities are foundational to Jiu-Jitsu
and are pivotal in helping young people handle conflicts without violence. The art itself
emphasizes grappling, joint locks, and submission holds—techniques designed to subdue
an opponent rather than harm them. This aspect of Jiu-Jitsu is crucial, especially in
environments like Kanlungan sa Pasig, where many children have experienced violence
firsthand.
Key Lessons of Jiu-Jitsu:
1. Respect for Others: Jiu-Jitsu teaches practitioners to respect their training partners and,
by extension, others in society. This respect is built into the structure of every training
session and encourages participants to see their opponents as people, not enemies.
2. Discipline and Self-Control: Practicing Jiu-Jitsu requires a high level of discipline.
Learning to stay calm under pressure and control one's emotions, even when in difficult or
uncomfortable positions, helps young people manage stress and anxiety in real life.
3. Empathy and Non-Violence: At its core, Jiu-Jitsu is about subduing an opponent rather
than causing injury. It teaches that strength is not about domination but about control and
understanding. By mastering these techniques, children can learn to resolve conflicts
without resorting to violence.
4. Resilience and Perseverance: Training in Jiu-Jitsu is challenging, both physically and
mentally. It encourages students to push through difficulties, whether they're dealing with a
tough opponent or a personal struggle in life. This builds resilience, a critical skill for
overcoming adversity.
Jiu-Jitsu as a Tool for Peacebuilding
In a world often marked by conflict and division, Jiu-Jitsu offers a path toward
peacebuilding. It instills values of discipline and non-violence while empowering young
people with the ability to defend themselves. The mat becomes a space for personal
growth, where respect for others is as important as physical skill. These lessons extend far
beyond the dojo, providing a foundation for navigating everyday challenges with maturity
and grace.
For the children at Kanlungan sa Pasig, learning Jiu-Jitsu has become more than just
mastering a martial art—it is a powerful tool for emotional healing, personal empowerment,
and social harmony. As they grow, these children will be better equipped to contribute
positively to a peaceful and compassionate society. The values of respect, discipline, and
empathy that Jiu-Jitsu teaches will serve them well as they face the world’s challenges.
As we move forward, let us embrace the spirit of Jiu-Jitsu, not only as a martial art but also
as a powerful tool for peacebuilding. It offers a path to creating a more harmonious and
just society, where the power of subduing and the art of peace go hand in hand.
Acknowledgments and Special Thanks
A heartfelt thank you goes to the Project Lead and Jiu-Jitsu Instructor, the awarded Jiu-
Jitsu expert himself, Rotarian Adrian Cayabyab. His dedication and expertise were pivotal
in making this initiative a success. Adrian’s extensive knowledge in Jiu-Jitsu, combined
with his commitment to peacebuilding, allowed the children at Kanlungan sa Pasig to not
only learn valuable self-defense skills but also to experience the deeper values of the
martial art—respect, discipline, and empathy. Throughout the session, Adrian’s hands-on
approach, patience, and ability to connect with the children helped build their confidence
and understanding of how non-violence and self-control can be tools for conflict resolution.
His guidance and positive influence have inspired the youth to continue developing their
strength—both physically and mentally—and to apply the principles of Jiu-Jitsu in their
everyday lives.
As the Youth Service Director, I would also like to extend our deepest gratitude to our Club
President Joann Cañete and Community Service Director and PE Tet De Guzman for their
unwavering support and encouragement in making this initiative possible. Their leadership
have been instrumental in ensuring the success of this project, and their commitment to
fostering peace and growth among the youth is deeply appreciated.
Lastly, on behalf of the youth club, I would like to thank the Rotary Club of Makati
Dasmariñas (RCMD) for the generous financial support. Your contributions have
empowered us to execute this impactful project, helping to build a brighter future for the
community.
Together, through service and collaboration, we are making a lasting difference in the lives
of the youth, creating a stronger, safer, and more compassionate world.
