RC Cebu Gloria Maris Supports Cebu Youth with Back-to-School Outreach

Updated: Jul 30

July 1, 2025 was more than just the beginning of a new Rotary year—it was a heartfelt celebration of new beginnings, shared purpose, and compassionate service. At the Cebu City Sports Institute in Barangay San Nicolas, Cebu City, the Rotary Club of Cebu Gloria Maris kicked off the year with “Unang Lakang: A Rotary Day for Children,” a joyful outreach that brought smiles, laughter, and school supplies to the children of Barangay Pasil and Barangay Ermita.

As the sun rose on a fresh Rotary calendar, more than 200 children arrived with eager hearts and bright eyes, welcomed by a vibrant team of Rotarians and Rotaractors. But “Unang Lakang” was more than a distribution of notebooks and pencils—it was about showing up for our community’s future, planting seeds of hope and reminding the children that they are seen, valued, and supported.

The event captured the very essence of Rotary’s mission: to serve above self. Beyond the school bags and snacks, what the children received that day was encouragement, confidence, and the kind of joy that stays in the heart long after the day is over.

This outreach became even more meaningful through the united efforts of fellow Rotary Clubs. Rotary Club of Cebu West, Banilad Metro, Mandaue East, Cebu South, and Cebu Fuente joined hands with us, bringing their time, resources, and volunteer power into the fold. All were bound by the shared vision of Rotary District 3860, proving that when clubs collaborate across areas, the impact is multiplied.

We were especially proud to have with us the energetic and dedicated members of Rotaract 3860, whose presence underscored that service knows no age. Participants from Areas 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, and 1E were in full force, reminding us all that together, we are not just clubs—we are a movement for good.

The day was made even more memorable with the presence of District Governor Angel “Jong” Fernandez, who graced the event with his inspiring words and warm leadership. His message reaffirmed our shared belief that “Rotary is most powerful when we move as one.” DG Jong’s encouragement lifted spirits and reminded everyone that every act of service, no matter how small, can spark lasting change.

Of course, this day of joy would not have been possible without the generous support of our partners. Our heartfelt thanks go to Nature’s Spring and Fruitas, whose donations provided refreshments and helped create a festive and welcoming atmosphere. Their partnership speaks to the power of collaboration between civic groups and businesses in achieving inclusive community impact.

The name “Unang Lakang,” which translates to “first step,” perfectly captures the spirit of the day. For many of these children, this was a step toward a brighter, more hopeful future. And for us Rotarians, it marked the first of many purposeful steps we will take this year in service to others.

As we move through the Rotary Year 2025–2026, we carry with us the joy and meaning of this special day. It has set the tone for what we aim to accomplish: inclusive outreach, intentional service, and community-building that transforms lives.

To everyone who shared their time, resources, and hearts—daghang salamat! Your generosity and presence made “Unang Lakang” a day to remember and a powerful example of what Rotary can achieve when we unite for good.
