RC Cebu Gloria Maris Advances Marine Conservation for Cleaner Coastal Communities

Beneath the waves of Bato Marine Sanctuary, silence carried a different kind of urgency—one that spoke of protection, responsibility, and renewal.

When Service Descends Beneath the Sea

On April 18, 2026, the coastal waters of Toledo City became more than a diving site—they became a mission field. At Bato Marine Sanctuary, visibility stretched between beauty and burden: vibrant coral formations on one side, and traces of marine debris on the other.

The Rotary Club of Cebu Gloria Maris proudly supported the Dive and Clean-Up Club (DCC) in a marine conservation initiative held in partnership with Aboitiz and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). What unfolded was not just an environmental activity, but a coordinated act of stewardship beneath the sea.

Dir. Evelyn Mercader, Dir. Floramay Gonzales, Assistant Secretary Jabe Maquiling, and Rotarian Ludy (Founder of DCC) stood alongside divers and volunteers united by a shared purpose: to restore what the ocean silently holds and heal what human activity has impacted.

A Dive with Purpose

As divers descended into the marine sanctuary, the world above faded into rippling light. Below, the ocean revealed both its resilience and its vulnerability. Plastic fragments caught between corals. Abandoned materials resting on the seabed. Yet alongside these were schools of fish weaving through reefs still alive with color.

Each movement underwater carried intention—carefully retrieving debris, documenting conditions, and protecting marine life from further harm.

“Every piece of waste recovered from the ocean is not just trash removed—it is a life protected and a future preserved.”

The effort required precision, patience, and respect for the underwater ecosystem. Volunteers worked methodically, ensuring that coral structures remained undisturbed while marine debris was safely collected and brought to the surface.

Partnership for the Planet

This initiative was made stronger through collaboration. The involvement of Aboitiz and DENR underscored a shared commitment across sectors—civil society, private institutions, and government agencies—toward marine protection and sustainability.

The Dive and Clean-Up Club (DCC), led by its founder Rtn. Ludy, provided expertise in underwater conservation and volunteer mobilization. Their continued advocacy for marine clean-ups has become a driving force in protecting coastal ecosystems.

The Rotary Club of Cebu Gloria Maris’ support reflects its expanding role in environmental stewardship, recognizing that protecting natural resources is essential to community survival and resilience.

“Marine conservation is not a solitary effort—it is a collective responsibility that requires every sector to dive into action together.”

The Ocean’s Silent Testimony

Bato Marine Sanctuary, like many coastal ecosystems in the Philippines, stands as both a sanctuary and a warning. Its beauty is undeniable, yet its fragility is equally clear. The clean-up dive revealed this dual reality—one that calls for consistent care rather than occasional attention.

For every bag of debris retrieved, there was a reminder: the ocean remembers what is discarded into it. And it also responds to those who choose to care.

The volunteers surfaced not just with collected waste, but with a renewed sense of urgency and purpose. What they saw beneath the waves was not just environmental damage—it was a call to sustained action.

“The ocean does not need occasional heroes; it needs consistent stewards willing to protect it every day.”

Why This Matters to Rotary Club of Cebu Gloria Maris

Environmental sustainability is deeply woven into the mission of the Rotary Club of Cebu Gloria Maris. As an island-based community, the club understands that the health of the ocean directly affects livelihoods, food security, and future generations.

This project is close to the heart of the club because it reflects long-term responsibility—not just responding to environmental issues, but actively preventing them. It also strengthens partnerships that amplify impact beyond what any single organization can achieve.

By supporting marine clean-up initiatives, the club reinforces its commitment to protecting natural ecosystems while promoting community awareness and engagement.

From Ocean Floor to Future Shorelines

As the dive concluded and equipment was packed away, the significance of the day lingered. The sanctuary was not completely transformed—but it was meaningfully improved. More importantly, awareness had been deepened among all who participated.

The ripples of this effort extend far beyond Toledo City. Each clean-up strengthens the message that environmental care must be continuous, collaborative, and intentional.

The Rotary Club of Cebu Gloria Maris supported the Dive and Clean-Up Club (DCC), in partnership with Aboitiz and DENR, in a marine clean-up dive at Bato Marine Sanctuary, Toledo City. The initiative focused on underwater debris removal and marine ecosystem protection, engaging divers and environmental advocates in active conservation efforts.

Why It Matters:

Marine ecosystems are vital to biodiversity, food security, and coastal livelihoods. Protecting these environments ensures long-term sustainability and resilience for communities dependent on marine resources.

In the quiet depths of Bato Marine Sanctuary, service took on a different form—one measured not in speeches or applause, but in bags of waste removed and ecosystems protected. Through action beneath the waves, the Rotary Club of Cebu Gloria Maris continues to prove that true service extends beyond land, reaching even the heart of the sea.
