In honor of the Autism Acceptance Month, the Rotaract Club of Cebu Fuente (RCCF) took part in the Angel’s Walk for Autism to rally support and promote greater awareness, acceptance, and appreciation of individuals living on the spectrum at the SM Seaside City Cebu on April 27, 2025.
Along with the club, hundreds of participants from government agencies, private organizations, special education centers, and universities joined the walk, wearing green shirts to symbolize autism acceptance.
The parade moved through the mall and concluded with a program featuring performances and presentations that highlighted the talents and creativity of the autism community.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), autism affects 1 in 100 Filipinos. Despite this, awareness and understanding of autism in the Philippines remain limited.
Deep-seated cultural beliefs and lack of accurate information have led to widespread misconceptions—among them, the idea that individuals with autism either do not communicate or possess savant-like abilities. These narrow portrayals erase the diverse realities of people on the spectrum and contribute to stigma and exclusion.
This is why celebrating Autism Acceptance Month every year is crucial. It serves as a reminder that advocacy and education must be continuous. Events like the Angel’s Walk for Autism help bring the conversation into public spaces, encouraging open dialogue and challenging outdated perceptions.
The Angel’s Walk for Autism, spearheaded by the Autism Society Philippines (ASP), is a nationwide campaign that champions inclusivity, understanding, and support for persons with autism and their families.
The Cebu leg marks the penultimate event in a series of walks held across ten SM malls nationwide. The campaign will conclude with a grand finale at SM Mall of Asia on May 18, 2025.
