Lighting the Way: A Brighter, Safer Future for Malabon’s Schools

In many parts of Malabon City, the school day doesn’t always end when the sun goes down. Students stay a little longer to finish requirements. Teachers prepare for the next day. Some simply make their way home through streets and pathways that, until recently, were not always well-lit. It was a concern that often went unnoticed, but one that mattered.
The Rotary Club of Malabon East, led by Good President Chun Hang Choi, took it upon themselves to address this through the “Light for Good” project, a solar street lighting initiative aimed at enhancing public safety, improving nighttime visibility, and supporting local communities.
On April 15, 2026, twenty solar-powered LED street lights were installed in key areas around school grounds, strategically placed to maximize coverage and community impact. Walkways, open spaces, and surrounding paths that used to fade into darkness are now easier to navigate.
At the City of Malabon University (CMU), the improved lighting has been felt more strongly by the students. Students and staff move more confidently across campus in the evening. What used to feel uncertain now feels a little more secure.
The choice of solar lighting was intentional as it provides a steady source of light without adding to energy costs, and it continues to function even during power interruptions. By harnessing renewable energy, the project also offers a sustainable and cost-efficient solution that reduces electricity expenses and environmental impact. In a city where reliability matters, that makes a difference.
Beyond school grounds, the initiative also focuses on illuminating dark streets and pathways, helping deter crime and ensuring safer mobility for residents, pedestrians, and motorists.
Projects like this are not always about scale. Sometimes, it is about responding to a simple need and doing it well. A well-lit path can change how a space feels. It can make people pause less, worry less, and move more freely.
For the Rotary Club of Malabon East, this effort reflects a broader commitment to service that lasts. Through strong community collaboration, “Light for Good” helps bring safer and brighter neighborhoods to Malabon while supporting long-term, eco-friendly development. More than what is built, what matters is how it improves everyday life for the people it serves.
