LETS Read: Empowering Young Minds Through Reading and Storytelling

In response to the persistent challenge of low literacy rates among Filipino children, the LETS Read (Learning English Through Storytelling) project was established more than a decade ago by the Corazon S. Atayde Memorial Foundation (CSAMF). Rooted in the belief that storytelling is a powerful tool for learning, LETS Read was designed to nurture comprehension, language skills, and a love for reading among young learners.

Over the years, the initiative has grown through meaningful partnerships, most notably with the Rotary Club of Pasig South (RCPS). Demonstrating a strong commitment to education and community development, RCPS has continuously supported CSAMF—not only through sponsorship but also through active collaboration in implementing and expanding the program.

In the previous year, RCPS focused its efforts on early-grade learners, specifically Kinder and Grades 1 to 3. The program reached a total of 102 learners, guided by 10 dedicated teacher-volunteers who facilitated engaging and interactive storytelling sessions.

Building on this success, the program took a significant leap forward this year. From September 2025 to February 2026, LETS Read expanded its reach within Buting Elementary School in Pasig, benefiting a total of 319 individuals. This included 241 students, 68 parents, 12 Interact volunteers, and 10 teachers. The growth in participation reflects not only the increasing need for literacy support but also the program’s effectiveness and strong community engagement.

At its core, LETS Read is guided by several key objectives:

  • Strengthening Literacy Foundations: The program sustains support for Grades 1 to 3 learners, ensuring that those who may be falling behind are better equipped as they transition into Key Stage 2.

  • Enhancing Early Readiness: A total of 139 kindergarten learners received Magsulat Tayo workbooks, helping to build essential pre-reading and writing skills at an early stage.

  • Empowering Educators: Teacher-facilitators were provided with professional development opportunities, enabling them to deliver more effective and impactful literacy instruction.

  • Engaging Parents: Recognizing the vital role of families, the program empowers parents to actively support their children’s literacy journey at home.

  • Mobilizing Youth Leaders: The revival and training of the Interact or “Big Ate, Big Kuya” Club created a group of young leaders who support literacy activities and spearhead school-wide literacy and environmental awareness campaigns.

Through storytelling, collaboration, and community involvement, LETS Read continues to transform lives—one story at a time. As it evolves and expands, the program stands as a testament to what can be achieved when organizations, educators, parents, and young leaders unite with a shared vision: to give every child the opportunity to read, learn, and succeed.
