April 5, 2025, changed me.
On that day, I found myself at the Manila Prince Hotel, attending a pivotal training session focused on the first 1000 days of life—from pregnancy through age two. It was here that I realized the profound impact this critical period has on a child’s future.
Governor Jackie Rodriguez opened with a powerful statement: “Children need us.” Those words echoed in my mind long after they were spoken. As a representative of the Rotary Club of Jose Abad Santos Manila, I was about to embark on a journey that would alter my perspective forever.
The insights shared by the speakers were nothing short of enlightening:
• Atty. Joey Lina emphasized the long-term impact of nurturing our youngest, underscoring how our care today shapes the society of tomorrow.
• Ms. Enah Calanog provided a roadmap for maternal nutrition and prenatal care, revealing how many health issues could be mitigated with simple, accessible knowledge.
• Dr. Maria Silvestre gave us a crash course on newborn care, leaving me to wonder why such vital information isn’t universally known.
• MIP John C. Gacutan introduced us to the eBuntis Platform, a groundbreaking tool for monitoring and improving maternal health during these crucial days. His approach ensures that our efforts are not just well-intentioned but effective.
What resonated most with me was the realization of how much these first 1000 days dictate a child’s future—impacting everything from brain development to long-term health and academic success.
Initially, I viewed this as another Rotary project. But as the day unfolded, it became clear that this was a mission of far greater importance. It’s about leveling the playing field for every child, ensuring they have the fundamental right to a healthy start in life.
The solutions are neither complex nor costly. They hinge on disseminating the right information to parents and communities and ensuring access to basic nutrition and healthcare.
Today, my focus extends beyond what our Rotary Club can achieve. It’s about what I, as an individual, am compelled to do. With newfound knowledge comes responsibility. Now that I understand the stakes, I am driven to act.
These children cannot afford to wait. And neither can we.
