13 Years of Elevating The Quality of Education in Public Schools

"Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world." – Marian Wright Edelman

For more than 13 years, the Rotary Club of Metro Marikina (RCMM) has been spearheading a “one-on-one” strategy for slow learners to improve reading and comprehension among students in public elementary schools.

Dubbed Mentoring the STARS (Students At Risk), this flagship project focuses on building foundational skills such as phonics and vocabulary; using visual aids like graphics and pictures; providing relevant texts; and employing active engagement through questions in a supportive environment. The program offers extra time and guidance across four (4) consecutive sessions.

RCMM has strategically developed its own textbook to provide adequate support to students recommended by partner schools as beneficiaries of the project.

"Our club is committed to continuing this project because we believe that education and literacy are fundamental to individual empowerment and community upliftment," said Good President Francis Niño R. Rodriguez.

This Mentoring the STARS service project has been conducted every year by the club since it was started in the year 2012. It falls under Basic Education and Literacy, an  Area of Focus of Rotary International that promotes education and literacy as tools to improve health, reduce poverty, foster economic development, and promote peace and tolerance within communities worldwide. Our good Governor Gina Sanchez has been a supporter of this project since 2018, and continues to help out for the benefit of the Students at Risk.

Mentoring the STARS Recognized by DepEd

Recently, RCMM was honored by the Department of Education Schools Division Office of Marikina City during the Coffee Break with Partners, held at the Marikina Convention Center. The event, themed “Enduring Partnership for Improved Learning Outcomes,” recognized stakeholders and organizations that supported DepEd’s campaign to elevate the quality of education in public schools.

RCMM was among the recognized stakeholders upon the recommendation of Sto. Niño Elementary School Principal Ana Liza Paz for two (2) consecutive years of partnership. President-Elect Minaluz G. Satorre received the Certificate of Appreciation on behalf of the club for its invaluable contributions and commitment to advancing holistic student learning.

"We at RCMM reaffirm our commitment to fostering educational initiatives and sustaining partnerships that will bring lasting change in our communities," said PE Satorre.

Successful Mentoring at SES

This year, thirty (30) student beneficiaries successfully graduated from the project in partnership with Silangan Elementary School San Mateo Rizal, in cooperation with School Principal Ms. Wilma Camiña. The participants were evaluated and awarded with certificates and gift packs. Special citations were given to the Top 5 students: April Papina, Mayumi Blazo, Liam O. Duco, Ghin Mark San Jose, and Zedrich Martin A. De Lara.

Over the years, RCMM has provided textbooks, uniforms, school supplies, and meals for both the identified student recipients and partner mentors throughout the duration of the project.
